Reflexology: The
Unofficial 2nd Opinion
by Todd Decker
Never underestimate the power in a single second opinion. Years
ago, I was fortunate enough to have my wisdom teeth removed. At the
time, it seemed like such a wonderful idea. Stave off future trouble
through a simple procedure removing some teeth that I had never used
and would never miss. After all, an ounce of prevention is supposed to
be worth a pound of cure.
Now I keep that amusing anecdote in the same place as "pick your nose
and your finger will get stuck" and "keep making that face and it will
stay like that." Today, I have all my fingers and though some may
disagree, I contend my face has always been like this. My
pre-operation visit went smoothly. The doctor explained why all four
of my back teeth needed to be ostracized. It was a mental diagram that
made sense to me in my head. However, the formula involving the pain
was left out. Not that it would have helped since the full perspective
of pain doesn't translate well on paper. Perhaps an ounce of
prevention is inaccurately represented as something minute. In the
end, the operation itself was successful without very much to
recollect. In the days after the surgery, I had the appropriate
medication to keep me from being too uncomfortable and prevent me from
operation of any nearby forklifts. At this time I talked with a friend
who had also had two of his third molars removed. He explained that a
pair of his wisdom teeth were compacted and needed to be expunged,
while his alternate pair growing in perfectly required no medical
assistance. I found myself alarmed by this newfound knowledge as his
dental situation mirrored mine almost exactly. When the doctor's bill
came, I discovered that not only was the pain in my mouth calculated
per tooth, but so was my dentist's fee. Regrettably, I had sought no
second opinion.
In modern medicine and science, despite all the advances of the last century and a half, indiscriminately there are alternatives available surrogate to traditional treatments. Despite common regimens accepted medically, scientifically and socially as a result of technological advancements, no matter the ailment, a person retains choice. Reflexology is one such alternative to modern methods. The Reflexology Association of Canada defines it as "A natural healing art, based on the principle that there are reflexes in the feet and hands which correspond to every part of the body." In essence, you may counteract health problems in a certain region of your body through treatment on the portion of your feet that correlate to that region the malady inhabits. Reflexology can be used to help restore and maintain the body's natural equilibrium. This gentle therapy encourages the body to work naturally to restore its own healthy balance. Although accepted as generally as chiropractics as not "true" medicine, reflexology predates most common medicines in any field. The beginnings of reflexology can be dated to ancient Egypt, China and India, with more recent advances taking place in the 20th century. Reflexology has been shown to be effective for back pain, infertility, migraine, arthritis, hormonal imbalances, sleep disorders, digestive disorders, stress-related conditions and even sports injuries. Depending on the infirmity, oils, lotions and certain soaps can be used to appreciate the value of the treatment. Besides its physical benefits, reflexology retains additional benefits to the patron of regular treatments. In Britain, a study had fifteen women receive half-hour reflexology sessions for eight weeks. The findings included noticeable physical and emotional improvements, increased self-esteem and confidence, an ability to stay motivated and be heard and taken seriously, and an improvement in concentration. Results, improvements and consequences of treatment are expansive.
Luckily growing up, my finger never got stuck, I never went blind from sitting too close to the television, my chronic arthritis from cracking my knuckles has yet to appear and I'm pretty sure that despite what my parents told me, that pack of gum from 1999 has probably digested by now. Even if these events in my life affected me long-term in some tragic way. I know I would have options. Some doctor in some laboratory is working on the cure at this very instant. And even if my knuckle-cracking, television-watching or gum-swallowing does turn out to be incurable and fatal, I can always seek a second opinion.
